Linz is the capital of Upper Austria and the country's third-largest city, situated on the Danube on the site of the Roman fortress of Lentia. The twentieth century was defined by heavy industry, while recent decades have been shaped by digital art: the city is home to the Ars Electronica Center and its festival, which earned Linz a place in UNESCO's Creative Cities Network as a City of Media Arts. Along the river, Lentos and the Ars Electronica Center stand facing each other; at the heart of the city are Hauptplatz and Mariendom, the largest church in Austria; and above the city rises Pöstlingberg, reached by the steepest adhesion railway in Europe. The surrounding area is home to the monastery of St. Florian with Bruckner's organ, and the Mauthausen Memorial.
