Niš is a city on the Nišava River and the administrative center of the Nišava District, with a historical heritage spanning the ancient, Ottoman, and modern periods. The area around the present-day city was home to the Roman Naissus, birthplace of Emperor Constantine the Great, while Mediana preserves the remains of a late-antique residential complex. The city center features Niš Fortress, Trg kralja Milana, and Kazandžijsko sokače, while Ćele-kula and the Crveni krst memorial complex represent important sites of more recent history. Niš is also known for its kafana and gastronomic traditions, while the surrounding area offers Niška Banja, the Sićevo Gorge, and other excursion destinations in southern Serbia.
