Poreč is a coastal town on the western shore of Istria with a history stretching back to Roman times, when it was an important administrative center. Today it is best known for the 6th-century Euphrasian Basilica, one of the best-preserved early Christian monuments in the world, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The main Roman street of Poreč, laid out as early as the 1st century BC, still serves as the primary pedestrian axis of the old town. Along it stand the remains of ancient buildings, Roman foundations, and Venetian palaces, making a walk down this street a journey through layers of history that have shaped the city over more than two thousand years.
Housed in the baroque Sinčić Palace from the 18th century, in the heart of the old town, the museum preserves a rich collection of archaeological finds, Roman inscriptions and objects from everyday life, ranging from prehistory to the modern era. The permanent exhibition also covers the Venetian period, which shaped the history and identity of Poreč for centuries.
Marafor is the former Roman forum and one of the most significant ancient sites in Poreč, where the remains of Roman temples from the 1st century can still be seen today, including preserved parts of the Temple of Neptune. Not far from the forum stands the Pentagonal Tower, part of the medieval defensive system of the city. Together they represent a striking blend of ancient and medieval heritage of Poreč.
Brijuni is a national park known for its Roman archaeological remains, Mediterranean parks, and exceptionally clean sea.
