Rijeka is the largest city of the Kvarner region and one of Croatia's main ports, situated between the Adriatic Sea and a hilly hinterland. The city center developed around the Korzo, the City Tower, and the Old Gate, while above the city lies Trsat with its fortress and Franciscan sanctuary. The Governor's Palace and the representative 19th-century buildings bear witness to a period of strong port development within the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In 2020, Rijeka held the title of European Capital of Culture.
