Rijeka is the largest city of the Kvarner region and one of Croatia's main ports, situated between the Adriatic Sea and a hilly hinterland. The city center developed around the Korzo, the City Tower, and the Old Gate, while above the city lies Trsat with its fortress and Franciscan sanctuary. The Governor's Palace and the representative 19th-century buildings bear witness to a period of strong port development within the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In 2020, Rijeka held the title of European Capital of Culture.

Emergency numbers ↗ HRThe Governor's Palace was built between 1893 and 1896 according to the design of Hungarian architect Alajos Hauszmann as the residence of the Governor of Rijeka. This monumental historicist building today serves as the seat of the Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral Rijeka. The museum collections present the maritime, cultural, and political history of Rijeka and the Kvarner region.
A fortress standing 138 meters above sea level over the Rječina canyon, with roots dating back to Roman times, while its current appearance originates from the 13th century. It offers a panoramic view of Kvarner Bay, Rijeka, and the surrounding islands, and within its walls there is a summer pavilion and occasional cultural events.
The Shrine of Our Lady of Trsat consists of a church and a Franciscan monastery on Trsat, above the center of Rijeka. Its history is tied to the end of the 13th century and the tradition according to which the house of the Holy Family from Nazareth was temporarily located at this site before being transferred to Loreto. For centuries the shrine has been one of the most important pilgrimage sites on the Croatian Adriatic, and the complex encompasses a church, a monastery, and a cloister.
Mount Učka rises directly behind Rijeka, and its peak Vojak at 1396 meters offers a view stretching from Istria to Kvarner and, in clear weather, all the way to the Alps.
