Schafbergbahn

A rack railway dating from 1893, running from St. Wolfgang up to a station at 1,732 metres, just below the summit of the Schafberg. The line is 5.85 kilometres long; a steam locomotive takes around one hour to climb, while a diesel railcar takes approximately forty minutes. Some of the locomotives have been in service since the railway's earliest years. The main season to the summit runs from late April to early November. Outside this period, trains run only on special dates — in spring as far as Schafbergalm, and during Advent and around public holidays according to a special timetable — so it is worth checking the timetable before you travel.
