Saranda stretches along a wide bay in southern Albania, across from the Greek island of Corfu, and is the main urban center of the Albanian Riviera. Along the waterfront lie a promenade, city beaches, restaurants, and cafes that remain active late into the evening during the summer months. Above the city stands the Lëkurësi Castle with views over the bay, while some of the most important sites in southern Albania are located in the immediate surroundings, including Butrint, the Blue Eye, and the coastline toward Ksamil. Unlike the smaller towns on the riviera, Saranda combines city life, the sea, and good connectivity with the rest of the region, making it a frequent base for exploring southern Albania.

The seafront promenade is the main gathering place in Saranda, connecting the harbor, city beaches, restaurants, and cafes along the coast. During the day it serves as a link between different parts of the city, while in the evening it transforms into the liveliest part of Saranda. The view toward the bay and the lights of Corfu in the distance gives the promenade a character that sets it apart from most towns on the Albanian coast.
The Ottoman-period fortress sits on a hill above Saranda and offers views of the bay, the Butrint lagoon, and the coastline toward Corfu. Once a strategic point for monitoring the coast, it is today one of the best spots to appreciate the city's position between the sea and the mountains. In the evenings, both locals and visitors come here to watch the changing light over the bay.
The remains of an early Christian basilica and synagogue represent one of the oldest historical layers of Saranda. Although today mainly foundations and sections of walls are preserved, the site shows how important this part of the coast was as far back as late antiquity. The ruins are located in the middle of the modern city, creating an interesting contrast between today's Saranda and its distant past.
Butrint is the most important archaeological site in Albania and one of the reasons many travelers come to this part of the country.
