Korčula is a small fortified town surrounded by stone walls that has preserved almost the same street layout for centuries. Its historic core was designed like a fishbone — the main street runs through the center of the town, while the side streets branch toward the sea in a way that shields residents from the bura wind in winter and the maestral breeze in summer. Behind the walls lie squares, palaces, and churches that recall the period when Korčula was an important maritime republic of the southern Adriatic. The island is also known for the Pošip variety, one of the most prized Dalmatian white wines, while on summer evenings the Moreška, a traditional sword dance that has been performed in Korčula longer than anywhere else in the Mediterranean, is still staged. Outside peak season the town retains a quieter rhythm, allowing its stone core, small harbors, and promenades to be experienced without large crowds.
