Upper Town (Acropolis) of Monemvasia

At the top of the rock above Monemvasia lie the remains of the Byzantine upper town, once the administrative and defensive center of the fortress. A steep hiking trail leads to the site, with the ascent taking about 20 minutes. Visitors can explore the ruins of fortifications, former residential buildings, and churches, while the summit offers spectacular views of the Laconian Gulf and the Peloponnese coastline. Within the upper town stands the church of Agia Sofia, one of the most significant monuments of Byzantine architecture in the region.
